Thought-provoking and educational."  Broadway World

With stunning puppetry and original storytelling, this is an unmissable production adapted from Sir Michael Morpurgo’s much loved story.

It is the summer of 1966. Charley and her little brother Alex are walking their dog Manfred on the beach when they notice two older men staring out to sea. A chance encounter brings them together. Slowly, Charley and Alex learn of their mother’s past, and of the friendships that can be formed in difficult circumstances. In 1945, their farmstead home was a posting for German prisoners of war, and their mother Grace was just a little girl…

The cast for this production includes serving and veteran military personnel and their family members. With stunning puppetry and original storytelling, this is an unmissable production adapted from Sir Michael Morpurgo’s much loved story.

“Little Manfred is a book that’s very dear to my heart that is above all else a story of reconciliation which we need today, more than ever. I can’t wait to see how The Soldiers' Arts Academy tells the story.” Michael Morpurgo

SAA are partnering with Firing Line Museum to host a Summer Garden Party and Evening Concert at Cardiff Castle!

This event is set to be a fantastic day out for all the family. The day time event will include short performances of 'Little Manfred', live music, puppetry and art workshops, dance workshops and poetry workshops. There will also be live music, face painting and much more!

You can then catch 'Little Manfred' again at the evening concert, along with the Orchestra of the Swan, performances from Maurillia Simpson and the Military Wives Choir and a fireeating and firework display!

SAA are delighted to say that our stage adaptation of Sir Michael Morpurgo's children's novel, Little Manfred, will be making it to the stage this October!

During the Covid-19 lockdown, SAA members worked with critically acclaimed director, Damian Cruden, to develop this wonderful production. The group worked online every week which led to an in person, week long development earlier this year.

The production is now set to open this October at the Polka Theatre London - and tickets are on sale now!

This is a fantastic production with the military community at its heart. Veterans and their families will be cast in leading roles, working within the creative team and be granted shadowing opportunities throughout the production.
